AQI explainer

The Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) provides rules to keep students safe during wildfire smoke or poor air quality events.

Key Points

  1. Air-Quality Monitor: Each school designates staff to track conditions before and during outdoor events. Schools shall regularly review the AQI throughout events to assess deteriorating conditions, using the AirNow Fire & Smoke Map.
  2. No Monitor Nearby? Use 5-3-1 Visibility Index:
    • 5 miles: OK for most
    • 3 miles: Sensitive groups at risk
    • 1 mile: Everyone at risk
  3. Conservative Approach: Always choose the safest option if conditions are uncertain.

AQI & Required Actions

  • AQI 0–100 (Good/Moderate), Visibility ~5 miles: Outdoor activities continue as normal.
  • AQI 101–150 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups), Visibility ~3 miles: Modify or reschedule activities; sensitive students may need breaks.
  • AQI 151–200 (Unhealthy), Visibility 1–3 miles: Outdoor activities should be moved indoors or canceled.
  • AQI 201+ (Very Unhealthy/Hazardous), Visibility 1 mile or less: All outdoor activities are canceled.
