ASHLAND – Japan used a bruising rushing attack to take control early and never let go en route to a 49-0 victory over the South Valley Wolfpack in the 18th edition of the Pacific Rim Bowl Friday at Walter A. Phillips Field.

Japan rushed for 202 yards and four touchdowns and led 21-0 at the half to roll to its fifth straight win in the international series that dates back to 1988. 

South Valley, made up of players from Phoenix High School and Ashland High School, was led by Logan Levorse, who had an interception. Saxon Brock had an 18-yard reception and Colton Hernandez rushed for 15 yards. 

For Japan, Kaji Saito rushed for 55 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Kai Takahashi passed for 81 yards and two scores and rushed for another 37 yards.

After the game, Phoenix head coach Charlie Hall put the game in perspective.

"There's some great lessons learned football-wise," he said. "Other than football, there's some amazing life lessons and connections and perspective that you can't get anywhere by being a part of this Pacific Rim Bowl.

"Again, we go back to it's more than just a game. Anything we talk about in life – successful school, successful teams, successful families – it's about those relationships and how you can build those connections."
