Phoenix High DECA team captures multiple top-three efforts at state conference

PORTLAND – Phoenix High School DECA students demonstrated outstanding business and marketing skills at the Oregon DECA Career Development Conference, with several members qualifying for international competition.

The conference, held February 22-26 at the Holiday Inn Jantzen Beach in Portland, brought together 1,300 high school students from across Oregon competing in business, finance, hospitality, and marketing events.

Phoenix High's Seneca Ikemire, Javier Quintana, and Shane Gordon captured first place in Business Operations Research. Quintana also earned third place in the Entrepreneurship Series, while Quintana and Gordon teamed up for third place in Entrepreneurship Team Decision Making. Bentley Becker and Sam LeCroy secured third place in Travel & Tourism Team Decision Making.

These top performers will represent Phoenix High School at the DECA International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida, April 26-29, 2025. Additional students may qualify depending on event dropdowns in the coming week.

Nine Phoenix students placed in the top 10 in their respective events, including Ikemire, David Arellano, Makaio Potts, Judas Casteel, Harrison Wykoff, India Akers, Keelie Woodside, Becker, and LeCroy.

Seven more students – Hollie Price, Akers, Woodside, Nicoletta Fields, Will Acord, Nakoa Potts, and LeCroy – finished in the top 20 in their events. Phoenix High took 23 students to the state competition.

Phoenix High School DECA has sent competitors to the International Career Development Conference every year since 2009.

DECA's competitive events, which are aligned with National Curriculum Standards in marketing, business management, finance, and hospitality, were judged by more than 100 business professionals. Students participated in role-plays, case studies, and prepared presentations.

DECA is a nonprofit career and technical student organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in business-related fields. The organization has over 287,000 members in more than 4,000 high school and college chapters across the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Germany.
