TES shines at PTS meet
PHOENIX – Talent Elementary won three of four team titles, Orchard Hill took the girls fourth grade victory and Phoenix Elementary earned the girls combined title as the fourth annual PTS 4th-5th-grade Track & Field Meet took over Jack Woodward Stadium at Phoenix High School Tuesday.
To add an extra layer of drama this year, event organizers John Cornet (PHS teacher/coach), Brian McKinnis and James Joy (PHS athletics director) set up live scoring through athletic.net and purchased trophies to hand out to each of the four teams that scored the most points in their class. The latter change proved to be a huge hit with the students as the trophy presentations were met with exuberant celebrations on the stadium turf (see above video).
The TES boys earned 139.5 points in the fourth grade competition and 105 in fifth grade events to sweep the boys team titles. The Mustangs also earned 244.5 points in the girls fifth grade events to claim that win, too.
Orchard Hill's fourth grade girls team tallied 85.5 points to take that title, while Phoenix Elementary's girls scored 156.25 points combined (fourth and fifth grade) to edge TES (154.75) for the combined girls team win. TES rolled to the combined boys team win, earning a whopping 244.5 points.
The winning teams will keep their trophies until next year's fifth annual meet.
