Wanted: running buddies
Girls on the Run serving 40 PTS girls, seeks volunteers for culminating 5K race
PHOENIX – The Phoenix-Talent School District's Girls on the Run program is gearing up for its culminating event, a 5,000-meter race scheduled for mid-November in Phoenix. Over 40 girls from the district's three elementary schools are participating in this season's program, which aims to empower young female athletes.
In its third year in PTS, Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based positive youth development program for girls in 3rd to 8th grade designed to teach life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games. Every girl in the program is participating at no cost this season thanks to a sponsorship by the Siskiyou Out Back Trail Run.
As the final race approaches, the district is calling for community involvement. Individuals interested in volunteering as running buddies for the Pioneer Road Race, scheduled for November 16 at Phoenix High School, can contact Katie McCormick at katie.mccormick@phoenix.k12.or.us.
The program is led by dedicated coaches across the district. Ashley Sims and Jamie Cross guide the Orchard Hill participants, while McCormick, Leslie Keiser and Mindy Robinson coach a group comprised of students from Phoenix Elementary and Talent Elementary.
