ASHLAND – The Talent Middle School scavenger hunt team last week placed third in Division A in the 2023 SOU Youth Programs Middle School Scavenger Hunt, giving the Bulldogs their third consecutive top-three finish in the annual competitive event that promotes intellectual curiosity and academic skill and is held at Southern Oregon University.

Led by advisor and TMS enrichment teacher Sandra Tringolo, the Bulldogs entered the event as the two-time defending champions after victories in 2021 and 2022 and made a serious run at a three-peat by amassing 250 points before being edged by Ashland (256 points) and Medford Logos (253 points). The Bulldogs ranked second in both the bring-in total (28) and total adjudication question points (222) in one of the most competitive top-three scavenger hunt finishes in the event's 25-year history.

The Valley School placed fourth with 192 points and Flemming Middle School fifth with 138. In Division B, Rogue River Junior High School took the first-place trophy, followed by runner-up Eagle Point Middle School and third-place South Middle School.

The goal of the SOU Youth Programs Middle School Scavenger Hunt is:

  • To increase knowledge of how to access and critically analyze sources of information
  • To encourage teamwork in an academic arena, and reward intellectual curiosity
  • To offer experience in constructing persuasive arguments with supporting evidence
  • To emphasize the importance of organization, documentation and precision
  • To promote civil discourse and respectful argumentation skill
