PHS lockout

February 14, 2024

PHOENIX – At approximately 1:30 p.m. today Phoenix High School was placed on a lockout after a witness reported that a man carrying a handgun was walking near the school.

When PHS initiates a lockout, all exterior and interior entrances, including doors, windows and gates, are closed and locked and nobody is permitted to enter or leave the school until the lockout is lifted. During this time, classes inside the school continue as normal.

A lockout is in response to a threat near a school and differs from a lockdown, which includes several other defense measures and is typically used in response to a threat inside – rather than outside – the building.

At approximately 2 p.m. officers located the suspect in a wooded area about a half-mile northwest of the high school and at 2:07 p.m. the lockout was lifted. The suspect was carrying two bladed weapons but no firearm.

Note: the community is asked to refrain from calling the school or attempting to pick up their child during a lockout or lockdown, as an influx of calls and traffic can impede the necessary response from emergency responders and staff.
